You don't have to manage on your own

Feeling understood by someone is one of the most validating and empowering experiences which can facilitate change.

Psychotherapist & Counsellor in Milton Keynes & Market Harborough

Hello, I'm Elizabeth, welcome to my website. If you're feeling stuck and not sure what to do next to make life feel better; you've come to the right place. I am an experienced UKCP registered (accredited) Psychotherapist & Counsellor, running a private practice in two locations in the East Midlands. I provide counselling and psychotherapy in Milton Keynes (Stony Stratford), Buckinghamshire and in Market Harborough, Leicestershire.

The way that I work is called 'person-centred' which means that my work is tailored to the individual needs of each person to create a safe, confidential and non-judgemental therapeutic space in which clients can explore challenging issues and affect change in their lives. It is rare for a person to contact someone for counselling or psychotherapy as a first choice if you have never had therapy before. It's often one of the last things people try either before or after medication. This could be because the person is worried that the therapist will judge them, or maybe they don't think their worries are significant enough to warrant extra support. Perhaps they can't see how exploring their problems, like anxiety or depression, with another person can help. Whatever the reason, many people wish that they had accessed support earlier, and feel a sense of relief having shared their troubles with someone they can trust, and don't have to worry about.

For therapy to be effective it is important that you choose a therapist that you can connect with, build a trusting relationship with, and a therapist who is prepared to work with you as a team. I have been described as being warm, understanding, 'normal' / down to earth, patient, insightful and having an 'ear' for detail. Clients are often pleasantly surprised at how much I remember, which demonstrates just how carefully I listen. I'm particularly skilled at supporting clients in making sense of their experiences. I currently work with individuals either on an open-ended basis or for a mutually agreed time period, with the aim of enabling you to enhance your life and live it more fully.

Examples of client issues

Here are a few examples of the types of issues clients want to work through in counselling and psychotherapy. Sometimes a client just wants to tackle one of these issues, or there can be a number of these issues combined together which is causing the distress. Either way I'm experienced in working with:

  • General anxiety / social anxiety
  • Depression
  • Relationship / family issues
  • Stress
  • Abuse (physical, verbal, sexual, emotional)
  • Bereavement (whether current, or happened in the past)
  • Addiction (e.g. food, alcohol, drugs, exercise)
  • Autistic spectrum conditions (such as Aspergers)
  • Eating problems (e.g. emotional eating / binge eating, bulimia)
  • Work related issues (e.g. stress, bullying, redundancy, and management issues)
  • and many others not listed.

  • Examples of client changes

Everybody is different, and different clients want different things from therapy. Some want to change their situation, others need the space to make sense of an experience, and others just want to find a way of feeling like themselves again. Here is a taster of some of the generic changes clients have achieved through therapy:

  • Returned to work after a period of absence caused by stress.
  • Found ways of coping with a bereavement.
  • Obtained clarity about what they wanted from their career.
  • Developed self-acceptance and self-care to improve their health and wellbeing.
  • Found new ways of coping with stressful situations.
  • Developed ways of managing their anxiety.
  • Reduced their reliance on anti-depressants.
  • Improved their relationship with partner / family member(s)
  • Created a better work/life balance.

  • Practice locations

I run my private practice from two locations in Leicestershire and Buckinghamshire. Whilst it can be handy to find a therapist right on your doorstep, it can be often helpful to travel a bit further to work with someone who you fully connect with. Clients travel to me from different locations, such as Bletchley (home of Bletchley Park) and from the surrounding Buckinghamshire villages for the Stony Stratford Practice. Clients also travel from the surrounding Leicestershire villages for the Market Harborough Practice.

    Examples of locations are:

    • Stony Stratford: Psychotherapist / counsellor (counselor) near Bletchley, Central Milton Keynes, Deanshanger, Yardley Gobion, Wolverton, Pottersbury, Towcester, Buckingham, Bicester, Calverton, Stantonbury, Kiln Farm, Shenley (Brook End, Church End & Lodge), Winslow, and Newport Pagnell.

    • Market Harborough: Psychotherapist / counsellor (counselor) near Great Bowden, Kibworth, Fleckney, Great Glen, Wigston, Oadby, Husbands Bosworth, Welford, Sibbertoft, Weston by Welland, Saddington, Lutterworth, Corby, Desborough, Rothwell, and Kettering.

Both practice locations are within easy reach of Northampton and the surrounding Northamptonshire villages. Click Market Harborough or Milton Keynes for further information about these locations.
